On July 27, the 7th Kubuqi International Desert Forum was held in Erdos City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. President Xi Jinping, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and numbers of foreign politicians sent congratulatory messages.

Vice premier Sun Chunlan, member of the political bureau of the CPC central committee, read a congratulatory letter from President Xi Jinping and delivered a speech

In the forum, more than 400 politicians, businessmen, experts, scholars and media representatives from more than 30 countries gathered in the Kubuqi Desert to conduct an in-depth discussion on the desertification control and cooperation of countries along the “One Belt One Road”, poverty alleviation, desert ecological technology innovation, green finance innovation and development, and promotion of biodiversity protection around themes of “green “One Belt One Road” and building ecological civilizations”. Mr. Li Zhenguo, President of LONGi, was invited to attend the forum and exchanged ideas on desert control with PV and improvement of human ecology through PV power generation in the dialogue forum part.

The Kubuqi International Desert Forum is a national large-scale foreign-related forum approved by the Chinese government. It is also the only multilateral forum in the world with the theme of desertification prevention and control and the only institutional forum held by the UN system and the Chinese government in China. In the forum, "Chinese experience" in the long-term desertification prevention and control process has attracted the attention of all the countries in the world.

Desertification – the Wretched of the Earth
Desertification is a global environmental and social problem that cannot be ignored by the international community today. According to the Global Desert Forecast published by the United Nations Environment Program, desertification is becoming more and more serious. More than 40% of the land in the earth is dry land which one third of the world's population live in. Problems such as climate deterioration, poverty, and extinction caused by desertification also seriously hinder the development of human society. The UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals demonstrate extreme concerns about desertification and environmental and social issues brought about by desertification.

 Climatic disasters caused by desertification

China was once one of the countries with severe desertification in the world. According to the national survey of desert, Gobi and desertification land and desertification research, China's desertification land area is 2.622 million square kilometers, accounting for 27.4% of the national territorial area, and nearly 400 million people are affected by desertification. According to international cooperation project research by China, the United States and Canada, the direct economic loss caused by desertification in China has been up to about 54.1 billion yuan.

"PV Experience" from "Chinese Experience"
The Kubuqi Desert, "China's seventh largest desert" in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, was once one of the most severe desertification areas in China, once causing the surrounding areas and even the capital Beijing to suffer from desertification. In the past 30 years, under the unremitting efforts of several generations of sand control people, today the Kubuqi Desert has undergone earth-shaking changes. At present, the vegetation coverage rate has reached 53% in the Kubuqi. Desert once called “a basin of sand hanging over the capital”, which has almost disappeared. According to United Nations data, the Kubuqi ecological restoration project has created nearly $1.8 billion in value, providing valuable Chinese experience for global desertification control.

Today, Kubuqi Desert has formed an integrated eco-cycle industry chain of “prevention and control of desertification– ecological restoration – industrial development – soil improvement”, and a mature and reproducible sand control system. Among them, the successful exploration of desertification control with PV has become a highlight of “Chinese experience" .

Desert management is a large-scale project that involves long-term investment and long period but slow effects. To achieve effective desert governance, it is necessary to solve the problem of "where to get the money, where to generate the benefit, and how to be sustainable?"
——Kubuqi International Desert Forum Wechat
The new desertification control model of “desertification control with PV” undoubtedly gives the most powerful response. PV and desertification control have the inherent advantages of complementary resources. A large area of deserts in Kububu provide the required land and light resources with more than 3,180 hours of sunlight per year for PV power generation which can bring considerable electricity income, effectively increasing the land value. In addition, the large-scale installation of PV modules can reduce the evaporation of soil water and maintain moisture for planting crops under the panel, which is more conducive to plant growth, desert greening and the development of breeding industry.

 PV transformation project

Desertification control with PV in Kubuqi has entered the 5.0 era, forming a systematic model with the core elements of “on-panel power generation, under-panel cultivation, inter-panel breeding, desertification control and industrial poverty alleviation”. In this model, PV power generation can directly convert into energy such as electricity and heat sources to generate economic effects and provide energy for inter-panel culture. On the other hand, an ecological planting industry is formed through under-panel cultivation, the remaining energy can provide fodder for inter-plate breeding, forming a characteristic ecological animal husbandry, and livestock feces can be used as fertilizer to back feed cultivation. Recycling benefits from “ecological restoration, land appreciation, PV industry, planting and breeding industry, and poverty alleviation for farmers and herdsmen” have been realized.

 The Kubuqi PV transformation project

Today, an ecological desertification control project with PV with a total planning of 1000 MW and area of about 100,000 mu has been established in the Kubuqi Desert. The completed 510MW project for Phase I can generate approximately 900 million KWh power annually and 660 million Yuan sales revenue. The project proves that efficient monocrystalline PV modules provided by LONGi can improve the power generation gain by 4% per year compared with other products of the same project, further enhancing the economic benefits of the project.

PV can do more
How can PV power generation contribute to the improvement of desertification control and human ecology in the future? Li Zhenguo, president of LONGi, illustrate more possibilities at the 7th Kubuqi International Desert Forum.

Li Zhenguo, president of LONGi spoke at the BBS exchange

"The large-scale application of PV power generation can solve the water source problem for desert greening," President Li Zhenguo said in the discussion session of the forum. He believes that one of the core problems of desert greening is the water source. The large-scale water diversion has not been achieved in the past for the energy required for water diversion has not been met. Moreover, under the energy structure dominated by fossil fuels, the energy consumed by water diversion will also generate a large amount of carbon emissions, which is not beneficial for improving the environment.

With the advancement of technology, the cost of PV power generation has dropped significantly. In the future, PV power generation will become the most economical energy in most parts of the world; large-scale water diversion and greening can be fully met through the combination of PV and energy storage. In this process, the energy consumed by PV generation produces no carbon emissions.

President Li Zhenguo also explained why “PV power generation + desert greening” can bring the huge social and ecological effects to humanity. According to authoritative research, 1% of the global desert area used for PV power generation to meet human energy needs, carbon emissions produced by all the human activities can be better absorbed When 70% of the earth's desert area becomes an oasis. At that time, all social and environmental problems caused by carbon emissions can be solved, which is the goal of the “Solar for Solar Negative Carbon Earth” concept put forward by LONGi.

The concept of "Solar for Solar - Negative Carbon Earth" by LONGi

Today, the Chinese experience provided by Kubuqi desertification control for global desertification control has been recognized and followed by more and more people, and the Various countries in the world has attached much importance to the huge potential of PV power generation in desert governance and ecological improvement. We have every reason to believe that as the proportion of PV power generation in the global energy structure continues to increase, the earth we live will be much better.
